AMD has announced its upcoming Instinct MI400 series AI chips, set for release next year, during an event in San Jose. These GPUs will integrate with the Helios rack-scale system, designed to support data centers efficiently. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised the MI400’s specifications, highlighting its capability to compete with NVIDIA’s Blackwell chips. AMD’s existing MI355X chip is already proving its worth, being seven times more efficient than its predecessor and enhancing compute efficiency by 40%. Despite currently lagging behind NVIDIA, which dominates the AI-GPU market, AMD aims to capture a significant share of the projected $500 billion AI chip market by 2028 through competitive pricing and open solutions. The company has invested in multiple partners and is developing an open infrastructure with UALink technology. AMD’s clientele includes OpenAI, Tesla, Meta, and Microsoft, with plans for annual updates to its AI chip offerings.
