AMD Secures Major Compute Power Partnership with OpenAI, Echoing Nvidia’s Strategy

OpenAI and AMD have partnered to enhance computing capabilities for AI development, echoing a similar deal with Nvidia. AMD will provide six gigawatts of computing power to OpenAI, which may acquire up to 10% of AMD’s stock—valued at approximately $33 billion after a 24% rise in AMD shares. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both companies, positioning OpenAI to bolster its AI model rollouts. The initial one-gigawatt deployment, using AMD’s MI450 chips, is set for late 2026, with stock vesting linked to OpenAI achieving technical milestones. This partnership occurs as Nvidia, holding over 90% of the GPU market share, also invests heavily in AI. Analyst Dan Ives describes this moment as a “1996 moment” for tech, likening it to the internet’s early days. AMD aims to significantly increase data center revenue, projecting potential earnings over $100 billion in the coming years.
