Anime and Manga Publishers Caution Against OpenAI’s Sora 2

Seventeen prominent Japanese publishing companies, including Kadokawa Corp., Kodansha Ltd., and Shogakukan Inc., have issued a joint warning regarding copyright infringement over OpenAI’s Sora 2 app, which uses artificial intelligence to create lifelike anime characters and videos. The October 31 statement emphasizes the necessity of obtaining permission from these publishers for any use of their copyrighted content during the AI’s learning and generative processes. They aim to balance cultural creativity with technological innovation while safeguarding the rights of all creators involved. Additionally, the Content Overseas Distribution Association, focused on combating piracy, has requested that OpenAI cease using member companies’ content without consent. This growing concern highlights the importance of intellectual property rights in the age of AI and the need for ethical practices in content creation. Legal action is on the table to protect the integrity of the anime industry and its creative professionals.
