Anthropic Limits Windsurf’s Claude Access Ahead of OpenAI Acquisition

admin

On December 29, 2024, in Chongqing, China, the rapid advancement of generative AI was showcased by a smartphone displaying the logo of Anthropic’s AI language model, “Claude.” In a surprising move, Anthropic terminated Windsurf’s access to its Claude 3.x models with under five days’ notice, as announced by Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan. He expressed disappointment over the abrupt decision, especially since Windsurf was willing to pay for full access. This restriction has led to temporary service disruptions for Windsurf users, although they can still access Claude via a third-party method. Additionally, the backdrop of this event includes OpenAI’s reported intention to acquire Windsurf for $3 billion, potentially creating competitive tensions. In response, Windsurf is promoting alternative models like Gemini 2.5 Pro and confirming that other integrations, including GPT-4.1, remain unaffected despite the limitations imposed by Anthropic.
