Anthropic Unveils Cutting-Edge AI Supercomputer – The Register

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is developing Project Rainier, a supercomputing cluster featuring “hundreds of thousands” of its Trainium2 accelerators, aimed at enhancing AI model training for its partner, Anthropic. This extensive system, expected to launch later this year, will comprise multiple sites, including a massive facility in Indiana consuming around 2.2 gigawatts of power. Unlike competitors using GPUs, Project Rainier utilizes AWS’s proprietary AI silicon, promising unprecedented scale for training AI models. Each Trainium2 accelerator, while less powerful compared to Nvidia’s latest chips, excels in training workloads due to its architecture and interconnect capabilities. The system aims to connect tens of thousands of UltraServers, potentially reaching over 256,000 accelerators, with an architecture designed for high throughput and low latency. Amazon suggests that the Project may evolve with upcoming Trainium3 chips, which promise significant enhancements in performance and efficiency.
