Apple is exploring the use of AI models from OpenAI or Anthropic to enhance Siri, as reported by Bloomberg. The new version of Siri, which aims to understand personal context and operate within apps, was initially promised at WWDC 2024 but was delayed until March 2025. As part of this initiative, Apple is working with these companies to train AI models compatible with its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, which uses secure Apple chips. While Apple currently utilizes OpenAI’s ChatGPT for some AI functionalities, relying entirely on third-party models marks a significant shift, given that most of its AI capabilities are powered by its proprietary Apple Foundation Models. Leadership changes within Apple’s AI teams have also occurred, with Craig Federighi now overseeing these efforts. The anticipated Siri update is now slated for 2026, while Apple will release incremental AI features in the upcoming iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates in fall 2025.
