Apple Prioritizes AI Integration in App Store and Hardware Development

Apple is shifting its focus towards hardware and services while competitors excel in artificial intelligence (AI), according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. He argues that Apple has conceded the AI race, especially after being outpaced by developments like ChatGPT and losing talent to tech giants such as Google and OpenAI. Unlike its success in music and TV, Apple’s strategy may mirror the App Store approach, where third-party apps coexist with in-house offerings. However, AI’s foundational role makes this strategy more complex. Research by PYMNTS Intelligence reveals that 52% of AI users prefer accessing the technology via installed apps rather than browsers, indicating a trend towards habitual use in “persistent environments.” As AI evolves from a mere tool to a core interface, firms controlling access points will shape user engagement and retention. Gurman concludes that Apple will likely leverage its hardware strength rather than directly compete against leading AI innovators.
