Apple is introducing significant AI advancements in iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe, including a chatbot-like feature in the Shortcuts app for private interactions with Apple Intelligence and a highly effective speech API that reportedly surpasses OpenAI’s Whisper. According to John Voorhees of MacStories, a test involving a simple utility called Yap demonstrated Apple’s impressive transcription capabilities. Yap transcribed a 34-minute podcast from a 7GB 4K video in just 45 seconds, significantly faster than competitors like MacWhisper and VidCap. Though Apple’s model struggles with specific names, its speed makes it 55% quicker than OpenAI’s best. Once iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe are publicly released, developers will likely create new apps leveraging these advanced AI models for audio transcription, enhancing the sector. Currently, these features are available only in beta versions for developers using iOS 26, macOS Tahoe, and Xcode 26.
