Assessing Teachers’ AI Proficiency: A New Evaluation Tool to Measure Skills

ETS has introduced the Futurenav Adapt AI test, marking a significant step in integrating AI into K-12 education. As teachers increasingly utilize AI tools for lesson planning and grading—despite a lack of training—this test aims to assess educators’ proficiency in managing AI ethically and effectively. It evaluates skills in recognizing generative AI, ethical navigation, and evaluating AI tools through three scenario-based tasks in under 30 minutes. With 80% of teachers reportedly using AI, there’s a pressing need for comprehensive training, as many feel unsupported. Only Ohio and Tennessee currently mandate AI policies in schools, highlighting a gap in guidance. ETS, which oversees the Praxis tests in 46 states for teacher certification, is well-positioned to adapt to future demands for AI proficiency in teaching licensure. This test allows administrators to identify learning needs and tailor professional development, ensuring teachers are equipped to navigate the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence in education.
