ATO and FWO Leaders Optimistic About AI’s Potential to Keep Businesses on Course

At the recent COSBOA National Small Business Summit, leaders from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Fair Work Ombudsman highlighted the potential of custom artificial intelligence (AI) tools to aid small businesses in understanding tax and employment obligations. ATO Commissioner Rob Heferen noted that their online resources have attracted over one million visits, emphasizing that AI could streamline access to accurate, up-to-date information by sourcing from multiple official channels. Fair Work Ombudsman Anna Booth expressed interest in enhancing advisory services with AI, which could improve the accuracy of pay and employment information while preventing reliance on general search tools that may provide incorrect data. While neither agency confirmed immediate plans for public-facing AI, initiatives like the Small Business PEAK chatbot indicate a shift toward technology-driven support. The government is focused on ethical AI use to maximize productivity and safeguard jobs, a sentiment echoed in recent discussions by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
