ATO Evaluates AI Solutions for 800 Key Developers

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support its 800 core developers in overcoming programming challenges. An AI coding assistant is being considered to provide features like intelligent code suggestions, bug fixes, automated test case generation, and code refactoring across multiple platforms. Aiming to enhance developer productivity, the ATO’s initiative would enable a focus on higher-value tasks such as application security and technology maintenance. The preferred solution is a software-as-a-service model that integrates with Microsoft’s development environments, including Visual Studio 2019, 2022, and Azure DevOps. Enhancements must ensure that sensitive code is not stored or used for training, addressing privacy concerns. This initiative aligns with the ATO’s broader strategy for AI, incorporating it into enterprise-level use cases like fraud detection and document analysis. Ying Yang, ATO Assistant Commissioner for Data Science, highlighted the collaborative potential between humans and AI in optimizing productivity.
