Australian small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations, with 58% currently utilizing AI tools. Despite positive outcomes like time savings and productivity boosts, many are relying on free large language models (LLMs) rather than robust enterprise solutions, exposing themselves to significant security risks. Less than half of the AI-using SMBs have adopted enterprise-grade tools, raising concerns about the safety of sensitive data. The study revealed a minimal understanding of necessary AI-supporting hardware among SMBs, with 78% lacking awareness about AI laptops and PCs. Additionally, slow software updates were noted among fast-growing firms, with 63% preferring to update only when necessary, leading to vulnerabilities. As technology leaders like HP and Microsoft collaborate to promote secure AI solutions, SMBs are urged to embrace enterprise-grade tools and timely software updates to maximize benefits and safeguard their data.
