BBC Launches Public Trials for Two Innovative Generative AI News Workflow Tools – NCS

admin

On June 27, the BBC announced the launch of public trials for two generative AI tools aimed at enhancing its news-production workflow. Spearheaded by Rhodri Talfan Davies, the pilots will explore “at a glance” summaries and a style-assist formatting tool. Following 18 months of internal testing, the BBC aims to evaluate if AI-generated summaries can help audiences quickly grasp key points from longer articles and if an AI assistant can streamline the reformatting of content to fit BBC’s style. In the “at a glance” trial, journalists will generate brief summaries with editorial oversight to maintain control over the content. The Style Assist tool will reformulate reports from the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), with a senior journalist reviewing the changes before publication. Initially tested by teams in BBC Wales and eastern England, the BBC will assess the tools’ performance and potential for wider implementation, all while ensuring transparency about AI’s involvement.
