Cohere, the Canadian AI company co-founded by Aidan Gomez, has partnered with Bell Canada to offer AI tools to governments and businesses. This collaboration allows Bell to provide access to Cohere’s large language model, North, and host it on its Canadian data centers, presenting a local alternative to U.S. providers like Microsoft and Amazon Web Services. The partnership is expected to bolster Cohere’s presence in the domestic market, as over 90% of its revenue previously came from outside Canada. This shift is partly driven by a growing emphasis on Canadian digital sovereignty amid concerns regarding reliance on U.S. tech firms. The deal includes a revenue-sharing model, with Bell integrating Cohere’s AI to enhance internal processes and customer service. Additionally, the federal government has invested $240 million in Cohere through its sovereign compute program, further underlining the importance of domestic AI development. Bell aims to generate $1 billion from its enterprise business by 2030.
