Beware: Deepfake AI Videos Could Deceive Your Banking Apps—And You May Not Even Know They’re on Your iPhone

A new deepfake tool targeting jailbroken iPhones poses serious security risks, enabling identity theft and banking fraud. Discovered by security researchers at iProov, this tool specifically affects devices running iOS 15 or newer. It uses a special server to connect a hacker’s computer to the iPhone, allowing a deepfake video to replace the real camera feed. Consequently, while the user sees their normal surroundings on the camera, apps, especially banking applications utilizing biometric authentication, may be deceived into thinking they are interacting with a real person. This vulnerability could lead to fraudulent activities. Researchers believe the tool originates from China and emphasize that financial institutions will need to enhance their security measures to include “liveness” tests to verify users’ authenticity.
