Bihar’s Road Construction Department (RCD) has collaborated with IIT Delhi to enhance infrastructure safety through a six-month certification program in AI-driven bridge design, monitoring, and maintenance, starting September 2025. Over 100 government engineers will be trained to utilize drones, sensors, and AI tools to assess bridge health as part of the Bihar State Bridge Management & Maintenance Policy, 2025. This initiative aims to reduce dependency on private consultants, bolster in-house capabilities, and ensure the long-term safety of state bridges. Key training topics include computing Bridge Health Index (BHI) scores, real-time monitoring, and applying Maintenance Priority Index (MPI) models. Under this policy, drone inspections for state-maintained bridges are mandated. Additionally, a Bridge Design Cell will be established to design infrastructure, potentially saving the state ₹65 crore annually. Discussions with the Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE) for specialized training programs further support this goal. As Bihar’s infrastructure future shifts toward tech-driven self-reliance, trained engineers will begin monitoring 85 audited bridges in 2025-26.
