Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, announced a collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to invest 7 trillion won ($5.1 billion) in an AI data center in Ulsan, South Korea. The center, set to start construction in September and operational by early 2029, will have a capacity exceeding 100 megawatts. AWS will contribute $4 billion to the venture, aimed at bolstering Korea’s AI infrastructure with high-speed networks, advanced computer chips, and efficient energy systems.

Chey emphasized that the facility’s design will leverage SK Group’s strengths in memory technology and operational expertise to support AI’s rapid growth. The conglomerate plans to invest 82 trillion won by 2026 in AI-related initiatives, including high-bandwidth memory chips, data centers, and AI start-ups, with competitors such as Kakao also making significant investments in AI infrastructure.
