On August 21, 2025, Caldwell University faculty, alongside Molloy University, participated in a three-hour professional development workshop titled “Navigating the AI Storm.” Led by Jason Gulya, esteemed Professor of English and Media Communications, the session addressed critical issues surrounding AI in education, offering educators practical strategies to improve teaching while maintaining academic integrity. Faculty shared their insights on challenges like AI-induced cognitive debt and the risk of shortcut learning. Gulya introduced the GEMS model for course design, which encourages embedding AI tools within pedagogical frameworks and enhancing assignments to foster critical thinking. Participants explored innovative assessment methods, including using AI chatbots for debates and teaching exercises, while emphasizing collaborative efforts to tackle AI-related concerns.
