California Raises Alarm Over ‘Serious Safety Concerns’ with OpenAI’s ChatGPT

California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Delaware Attorney General Kathleen Jennings have raised “serious concerns” about OpenAI’s ChatGPT, following allegations linking the AI to tragic incidents, including a teenage suicide. They emphasize that OpenAI and the AI industry must prioritize safety in product development. The concerns stem from a review of OpenAI’s shift from a nonprofit to a for-profit model, which may face regulatory challenges due to its incorporation in Delaware. Recent cases highlight the potential dangers of ChatGPT, including a murder-suicide tied to a user’s delusional perceptions allegedly reinforced by the chatbot. The AGs demand OpenAI enhance safety measures, especially for children, warning of potential fines or legal repercussions for non-compliance. In response, OpenAI has expressed commitment to safety and announced new features like parental controls. Bonta insists there must be a rapid response to address these pressing issues, underscoring the urgency of regulatory oversight in AI technology.
