California’s CIO Urges Agencies to Weigh Benefits, Value, and Costs in AI Projects

As California nears the two-year mark of Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order aimed at regulating artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, state Chief Information Officer Liana Bailey-Crimmins emphasizes thoughtful integration of AI in government. She urges agency leaders to weigh the “benefit, value, and cost” of AI solutions and to consider non-AI alternatives. In a recent interview, Bailey-Crimmins highlighted ten proofs of concept that have been developed, focusing on enhancing transportation management, traffic safety, and addressing language barriers in a diverse state with approximately 200 spoken languages. Additionally, she referenced Gartner research predicting that most software will incorporate AI by 2026. Bailey-Crimmins aims to ensure that state agencies can efficiently leverage these tools, particularly as they already invest in AI-capable software suites such as those from Adobe and Microsoft.
