Canadian Minister to Confer with OpenAI’s Altman on Safety Strategies Following Shooting Incident

Canada’s AI Minister, Evan Solomon, will meet with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman next week to discuss enhancing safety protocols following a recent school shooting in British Columbia. The Canadian government has urged OpenAI to act swiftly in improving its protocols, warning of potential legislative changes after learning that the company hadn’t informed law enforcement about a banned account belonging to the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar. While OpenAI has expressed intentions to strengthen law enforcement referral protocols and improve safeguards against policy violations, Solomon emphasized the need for a concrete implementation plan. Solomon’s discussions with Altman aim to clarify OpenAI’s commitments, especially after Van Rootselaar allegedly killed eight people on February 10. Additionally, Solomon plans to engage with other major platforms in Canada to explore further safety measures. “All options remain on the table as we assess necessary steps,” he stated.
