ChatGPT Co-Creator Seeks to Leave Meta Shortly After Joining—Mark Zuckerberg Steps In with an Irresistible Offer, Reports Say

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stirred the Silicon Valley scene by launching a new Superintelligence division, luring top talent from AI powerhouses like OpenAI, Google, and Apple. Reports indicate significant sign-on bonuses and personal meetings with Zuckerberg were enticing factors. However, soon after its formation, the division has seen an exodus of talent. Notable departures include machine learning scientist Ethan Knight, former OpenAI researcher Avi Verma, and research scientist Rishabh Agarwal, who cited a compelling initial offer but a subsequent desire for different challenges. Long-term generative AI employees, including Chaya Nayak and Loredana Crisan, have also exited. ChatGPT co-creator Shengjia Zhao, who briefly joined Meta, sought to return to OpenAI shortly after starting. Sources indicate dissatisfaction with Superintelligence chief Alexandr Wang’s leadership and frustration over internal competition and bureaucracy as reasons behind these departures. The leadership instability raises concerns about Meta’s ability to retain its AI talent.
