ChatGPT Emerges as Top AI Chess Player Following Final Victory — See How Gemini and Grok Rank

OpenAI’s ChatGPT o3 model triumphed over Elon Musk’s xAI model Grok 4 in a three-day chess tournament, securing its position as the leading AI chess player. Google’s Gemini captured third place after defeating another OpenAI model. According to BBC reports, both Musk and OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman assert their models are the world’s most advanced. However, Grok displayed notable weaknesses, including several blunders during the final matches, such as losing its queen. Chess.com writer Pedro Pinhata noted that while Grok 4 seemed unstoppable until the semifinals, its errors ultimately led to its downfall. Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura highlighted OpenAI’s consistent performance versus Grok’s “blundering” play. Musk acknowledged Grok’s earlier success was coincidental, with minimal effort placed on chess capabilities. This tournament distinguished itself by pitting general-purpose AI against one another rather than traditional chess engines, reigniting discussions on AI’s evolution in competitive environments.
