OpenAI is set to introduce ads to ChatGPT, a significant shift from its previous stance of considering ads a “last resort.” CEO Sam Altman had initially expressed discomfort with ad integration, noting the unsettling nature of ads paired with AI. However, the financial demands of competing in the AI landscape, with over $1.4 trillion in commitments to data centers, have prompted this change. OpenAI aims to balance user trust and transparency in this transition, ensuring that ads will not influence AI responses and that user conversations will remain private. Ads will be introduced to free and Go users, while paid subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans will remain ad-free. Fidji Simo, CEO of applications, emphasizes a respectful approach to user data, insisting that OpenAI’s ad model will differ from traditional practices. This evolution marks a crucial step for OpenAI amid intensifying competition in the tech industry.
