OpenAI has announced the global launch of group chats in ChatGPT, available to all users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. This update, following a pilot in regions like Japan and New Zealand, transforms ChatGPT from a one-on-one assistant into a collaborative space for friends, family, or colleagues. Up to 20 participants can engage in a single conversation, collaboratively planning trips, drafting documents, tackling debates, and conducting research. Each user’s personal settings remain private, and group chats start by tapping the people icon to invite others. The AI can respond to tags, react with emojis, and will intelligently decide when to contribute to discussions. This feature marks a significant step towards evolving ChatGPT into a more social and interactive platform. OpenAI anticipates that future updates will enhance collaborative experiences, especially after the recent GPT-5.1 launch and the introduction of their new social app, Sora.
