ChatGPT User Growth Slows as Gemini Downloads Surge

Speculation around an AI bubble is intensifying, particularly as competition heats up among tech giants. Notably, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei points out flagging growth for ChatGPT, which is experiencing a slowdown in weekly users—only 6% growth from August to November. However, ChatGPT still dominates, comprising 50% of global downloads on mobile devices. In contrast, Google’s Gemini is rapidly closing the gap, boasting a 30% increase in monthly active users during the same period, fueled by its new Nano Banana image model. Sensor Tower data suggests Gemini’s user engagement is soaring, with users spending an average of 11 minutes daily—up 120% since March. This competitive environment reflects shifts across the AI chatbot landscape, with rivals like Claude and Perplexity also gaining traction. OpenAI’s leadership remains robust, but as Gemini’s performance highlights, innovation and personalization efforts—like those initiated by Sam Altman—are critical for maintaining market dominance.
