China Suspends AI Tools for National College Entrance Exams

Leading Chinese AI companies have temporarily disabled key features of their chatbots to prevent cheating during the gaokao, China’s rigorous college entrance exams held from June 7-10. As concerns about AI-facilitated cheating escalated, popular applications like Alibaba’s Qwen and ByteDance’s Doubao turned off their photo recognition capabilities, which could have enabled students to scan questions and receive answers. Tencent’s Yuanbao and Moonshot’s Kimi completely shut down these functions during exams. The move reflects a growing global challenge, as many educational institutions, particularly in the U.S., are reverting to traditional exam methods to safeguard academic integrity. The gaokao is particularly high-stakes in China, affecting millions of students, thus prompting AI firms to act discreetly for fairness.
