Claude Gains Ground on OpenAI as ChatGPT Dips in U.S. App Store Rankings

Anthropic’s Claude has overtaken OpenAI’s ChatGPT in U.S. App Store downloads, marking a significant shift in the AI landscape. As reported by Business Insider, Claude reached 1.1 million downloads in February, a 240% increase, and achieved the top spot among free iPhone apps in the U.S., Canada, Germany, Ireland, and Luxembourg as of March 1. Just a month earlier, it was outside the top 40. Anthropic co-founder Mike Krieger noted that more than a million users are signing up daily. This surge comes amid controversy for OpenAI, which hastily signed a U.S. Defense Department contract, causing internal acknowledgment of missteps by CEO Sam Altman. While Claude gains traction, ChatGPT remains the leader in the global AI chatbot market, boasting over 900 million weekly active users compared to Claude’s 2.1 million downloads this year, alongside Google Gemini’s 750 million monthly users.
