Clemson University’s College of Education has launched three innovative microcredential courses for K-12 educators, focusing on the effective integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms. These 4-week courses provide educators with foundational knowledge of AI, practical tools for classroom enhancement, and frameworks for ethical AI use.
Led by Dani Herro, Dean’s Fellow for Humanistic AI, the curriculum emphasizes the “humanistic” application of technology, preparing students for AI-influenced careers. Herro highlights the importance of using AI as a cognitive partner to promote critical thinking rather than rote learning.
Courses include real-world lesson plans, such as engaging middle school students in South Carolina history through AI-driven projects. Participants will reflect on AI policies, craft classroom-specific guidelines, and learn about prompt engineering and AI ethics. Pilot courses will begin in February 2026, with opportunities for improving content based on educator feedback. Completion of all three courses contributes towards graduate credit.
