Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince expressed concerns about the declining search traffic for publishers due to increased reliance on AI-generated summaries rather than clicking through links provided by chatbots. He revealed that the traffic-to-page ratio has drastically decreased: from Google sending one visitor per two pages a decade ago to just one per 18 pages today. OpenAI and Anthropic have similarly reduced their referral rates. Prince emphasized that this trend poses a threat to publishers’ revenue since they rely on ad clicks from their sites. In response, Cloudflare is creating tools to block bots that scrape content, despite existing “no crawl” directives. Their recent AI Labyrinth initiative aims to confuse unauthorized crawlers by directing them to misleading AI-generated pages. Prince underscored the importance of protecting publishers from scrapers that disregard web protocols while highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by sophisticated international hackers.
