CNH’s Ambitious Journey to Revolutionize Farming with Artificial Intelligence

Jay Schroeder, CTO of CNH, recently discussed the nascent application of artificial intelligence (AI) within the company’s R&D in Brazil, despite the substantial investments in certified tools and governance. Concerns about AI’s return on investment, highlighted by a study showing 95% of AI pilots fail, contribute to apprehensions. However, CNH has made strides in precision agriculture, employing AI to enhance efficiency—software engineers have reduced documentation time by 60%, and AI-enabled spraying systems can cut herbicide usage by 80%. While some projects yield measurable time savings, quantifying exact benefits remains challenging. As environmental pressures mount, CNH aims to leverage AI to support farmers by improving decision-making and yield management. Despite headwinds like weakened sales, the company plans to invest $5 billion over five years in R&D and manufacturing. Partnerships, particularly with Microsoft, are set to further enhance their AI capabilities, ensuring CNH stays at the forefront of agricultural technology.
