Cochrane Unveils Pioneering Study to Evaluate AI Tools in Evidence Synthesis

Cochrane has initiated a study to evaluate the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on evidence synthesis, adhering to rigorous standards for transparency and methodological integrity. As AI technologies rapidly evolve, Cochrane aims to address potential limitations found in prior evaluations, primarily those conducted by tool developers. The study, led by the AI Methods Group, will assess AI’s effectiveness at critical stages like literature screening and data extraction across approximately 15 Cochrane review updates. After a thorough assessment of 48 proposals from AI tool developers, two tools were shortlisted based on their maturity, affordability, and compliance with ethical standards. The innovative platform study design allows for simultaneous evaluation of multiple interventions, offering flexibility in incorporating effective AI tools while excluding ineffective ones. Collaborations include experts from various universities, aiming to complete the platform study by late 2026. This initiative underscores Cochrane’s commitment to advancing responsible AI in research.
