The 2025 G7 Summit in Canada, held amid growing geopolitical tensions, focused on harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Technology for economic and social benefits. This marked a shift from viewing AI as a threat to recognizing its potential in enhancing business efficiency and public sector services, supported by CAD 10 million in funding for AI and energy solutions. However, the summit’s outcomes lacked engagement with the military implications of AI technologies, which are increasingly utilized in conflict zones. For instance, the Russia-Ukraine War exemplifies the use of AI in drone warfare, while India and Pakistan have integrated autonomous systems into their military operations. Despite urgent ethical concerns surrounding AI in warfare, multilateral discussions, including the EU AI Act, have largely overlooked defense applications. Recommendations include leveraging existing international initiatives to regulate military AI use, as proposed by the UN. The G7 can play a crucial role in addressing the gaps in oversight and ethical considerations surrounding AI militarization.
