College of Education Professor Develops AI Tool to Empower Teachers and Enhance Student Learning

Jeremy Riel, an assistant professor in the College of Education, is pioneering SkillTree, an AI-enabled platform designed to enhance teacher feedback to students. Supported by a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences, Riel aims to transform educational approaches while maintaining vital human interaction. SkillTree organizes essential skills visually, enabling students to identify their strengths and areas for improvement, much like video game skill trees. As students submit assignments, the AI analyzes their work and provides teachers with concise reports on skill understanding, allowing for personalized instruction. Riel emphasizes ethical AI development, ensuring transparency in AI evaluations linked directly to the SkillTree framework, thereby safeguarding data privacy at UIC. Funded through the Seedlings to Scale initiative, SkillTree aims for rapid prototyping and may expand its applications across various subjects. Ultimately, Riel envisions this tool will promote better learning outcomes and empower teachers to engage more effectively with students.
