Colombian Students Triumph with AI-Driven Exoplanet Discovery Tool

At the 2025 NASA International Space Apps Challenge, the ECI Centuri team from Colombia’s Escuela Colombiana de Ingenieria Julio Garavito emerged victorious by developing an innovative AI tool, “Exoplanet Hunter AI,” designed to detect exoplanets using real NASA data. Competing in Bogota, this multidisciplinary group of students excelled in a two-day hackathon, leveraging machine learning to analyze light curves for potential exoplanet candidates. Under the mentorship of Professor Wilmer Garzon Alfonso, they crafted a user-friendly interface that made their complex data accessible even to non-experts. This achievement not only highlights Colombia’s capabilities in AI and astrophysics but also serves as inspiration for future innovators in STEM fields. The success of ECI Centuri emphasizes the importance of open data and collaborative problem-solving, motivating more students to explore space careers and participate in global scientific endeavors. Their project exemplifies how local talent can contribute significantly to the quest for new worlds.
