Waymo, a self-driving car company owned by Alphabet, is testing Google’s Gemini AI as an in-car assistant for its robotaxis. Researcher Jane Manchun Wong uncovered details in the Waymo mobile app, revealing a 1,200+ line “Waymo Ride Assistant Meta-Prompt.” Gemini AI can answer questions, control cabin functions like climate, and provide personalized greetings. Waymo’s spokesperson, Julia Ilina, indicated ongoing enhancements to rider experiences using advanced technologies. Gemini has also contributed to training Waymo’s autonomous vehicles using its “world knowledge.” Currently, it can manage temperature, lighting, and music but lacks controls for volume, route changes, or seat adjustments. Its responses to rider inquiries about competitors like Tesla are limited to deflection, while general knowledge queries are allowed. This integration emphasizes Waymo’s commitment to leveraging AI for improved passenger experiences while maintaining boundaries on the assistant’s capabilities.
