Former Apple design chief Jony Ive is collaborating with OpenAI to create a new AI consumer product, described as a “third core device” that will complement existing gadgets like the MacBook Pro and iPhone. This device will not be a wearable or in-ear product, contradicting earlier industry predictions. OpenAI had to remove mentions of its hardware startup, io, from its website due to a trademark lawsuit by iyO, a company developing in-ear devices. Court filings revealed that while io surveyed existing audio products, its initial offering won’t be wearable or in-ear. Despite initial skepticism about the device’s wearability, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has called the prototype “the coolest piece of technology.” The gadget, expected to launch by late 2026, aims to leverage context-awareness and be screen-free, with plans to ship 100 million units rapidly. As the project’s details remain vague, anticipation continues amid legal and design challenges.
