The federal government’s proposal to ban artificial intelligence (AI) applications generating explicit deepfake images has gained support from our union, emphasizing the need for safer schools and workplaces. This initiative addresses a significant rise in reports to the Office of the eSafety Commissioner regarding image-based abuse. Notably, incidents involving digitally altered intimate images, including deepfakes, from individuals under 18 have more than doubled in the past 18 months. This alarming trend highlights the urgency of implementing regulations to protect vulnerable populations from the harmful effects of AI technology. The proposed ban aims not only to safeguard minors but also to foster a safer digital environment, combating the misuse of AI in creating exploitative content. The union advocates for enhanced protections and comprehensive policies to ensure that advancements in technology do not compromise safety and well-being.
This proactive approach to AI regulation will help mitigate abuse and promote responsible technology use.
