UK graduates often feel unprepared in the workplace due to inadequate communication skills. To tackle this, an innovative AI tool has been developed that offers timely, formative feedback on students’ spoken communication and written assignments. Users can upload audio recordings to receive tailored suggestions, enhancing their reflective writing skills. The tool emphasizes ethical AI development, prioritizing human agency, transparency, and student involvement through a structured design thinking approach. Key principles include obtaining research ethics approval, ensuring data privacy, and continuously adapting the tool to meet evolving student needs. Despite resistance from university decision-makers, the project illustrates the importance of collaboration and ethical considerations in AI deployment. The tool employs open-source technologies, safeguarding student data and encouraging institutional autonomy in AI applications. Future plans include integrating video submissions to further enhance communication skills. For more information about the feedback tool, contact Isabel Fischer at Warwick Business School.
