Creating AI Tools to Transform Any Voice into a Celebrity’s Without Permission: A Breach of Personality Rights

The Bombay High Court has granted playback singer Asha Bhosle temporary protection of her personality rights against unauthorized use of her voice and likeness by AI platforms. Justice Arif S Doctor emphasized that converting a voice into that of a celebrity without permission violates personality rights, which are crucial for safeguarding a celebrity’s identity. Bhosle’s petition targeted several defendants, including Mayk Inc. for using AI to clone her voice, and Amazon and Flipkart for selling merchandise that exploits her image without consent. The Court issued strict directives prohibiting these entities from using Bhosle’s attributes for commercial gain without written consent. This decision reinforces legal precedents recognizing unauthorized AI manipulation of celebrity traits as a violation of personality rights. The case is scheduled for further hearing on October 13, 2025. For more legal updates, subscribe to our channel.
