Telecommunications companies (telcos) are exploring the integration of AI agents to automate network operations, focusing on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent2Agent (A2A) Protocol solutions. Telenor’s architects envision a shift toward layered, agentic domains, aiming to reduce manual operations by leveraging accurate data for decision-making. MCP, launched by Anthropic in late 2024, facilitates agents in executing complex tasks autonomously by wrapping existing APIs. Similarly, Google’s A2A, introduced in 2025, enables seamless interaction between agents without sharing memory, promoting scalable multi-agent environmental frameworks. Vodafone emphasizes MCP’s importance for real-time operations but warns about potential security risks. Collaborative efforts continue to achieve standardized protocols that provide a shared ontology and robust security measures. As telcos adopt these advancements, the challenge lies in ensuring interoperability, security, and a unified approach to agentic AI deployment while balancing the need for bespoke solutions.
