Cyberattacks Surge as Hackers Leverage AI and Apps

In the first half of 2025, cybercriminals intensified malware attacks, shifting focus from traditional emails to collaboration platforms, with a notable rise in ransomware, phishing, and social engineering, according to the Acronis Cyberthreats Report. Ransomware incidents surged nearly 70% compared to the previous years, with the Cl0p gang exploiting vulnerable systems. The manufacturing sector was the most affected. Managed service providers (MSPs) faced significant threats, primarily due to phishing and unpatched vulnerabilities. Additionally, remote monitoring tools like TeamViewer were weaponized, escalating risks for client systems. Phishing attacks spiked in collaboration platforms, highlighting a trend away from email exploitation. AI also played a pivotal role in enhancing cybercrime capabilities, enabling sophisticated attacks. Businesses are urged to adopt multilayered security, patch vulnerabilities, and implement robust incident response strategies to combat these evolving threats. The report underscores that every organization, regardless of size, remains a potential target in this dynamic landscape.
