Dating Apps Turn to AI to Capture Gen Z’s Interest, But Survey Shows Limited Success

While dating apps surged in popularity among millennials, Gen Z expresses skepticism towards finding love online. Match Group’s CEO, Spencer Rascoff, acknowledged this trend, revealing that many Gen Z users find the “photo judging” approach cringeworthy. To attract younger users, apps like Hinge, Tinder, and Bumble are integrating AI features aimed at enhancing user experience, such as prompts for profile creation and conversation starters. However, a Bloomberg survey showed that nearly 50% of Gen Z respondents found these AI tools ineffective. Additionally, many in this generation are uncomfortable utilizing AI for messaging or modifying profiles. Despite efforts to improve user engagement, the industry’s revenue has declined, with Bumble’s quarter one revenue dropping 8% and Tinder’s by 3%. In contrast, Hinge reported a 23% revenue increase. As dating apps confront challenges in user engagement and satisfaction, they must consider fostering real-world connections to regain their appeal.
