David Dugan, formerly a leader at Meta, has transitioned to OpenAI as Vice President and Head of Global Ads Solutions. This move comes just as OpenAI prepares to introduce advertising in its ChatGPT app, which boasts approximately 900 million weekly users. Dugan’s primary focus will be to establish a robust advertising team, enhance the ad experience within ChatGPT, and create new revenues from non-paying users. His strategy emphasizes AI-native solutions, adopting a unique approach compared to traditional ad platforms. Major agencies and brands, including Dentsu and Best Buy, have shown interest in advertising on ChatGPT, which requires a substantial minimum spending commitment of $200,000 to $250,000 with a cost of $60 per 1,000 views—significantly higher than Meta’s rates. OpenAI aims to maintain user experience by ensuring ads do not influence ChatGPT’s responses or involve selling user data. Dugan joins other former Meta executives, like CEO Fidji Simo, in this strategic shift.
