During the Coalesce 2025 conference, dbt Labs unveiled innovative tools aimed at enhancing data platform development and achieving cost savings. The introduction of four specialized AI agents—Developer, Discovery, Observability, and Analyst—enhances the data development lifecycle by optimizing code and facilitating dataset identification. The dbt Fusion engine, now in preview for major platforms like BigQuery and Snowflake, enables significant cost reductions, reportedly up to 50%, by utilizing state-aware orchestration to execute only modified models. Additionally, it supports Apache Iceberg tables, enhancing flexibility for data teams. The dbt VS Code Extension allows local Fusion execution, improving integration with production workflows. Moreover, dbt Insights centralizes definitions, lineage, performance metrics, and costs. In a move towards open standards, MetricFlow has become fully open-source under an Apache 2.0 license, reinforcing dbt Labs’ commitment to the Open Semantic Interchange initiative. CEO Tristan Handy highlights that AI and open standards are pivotal in transforming analytics.
