OpenAI’s latest threat report reveals that malicious actors, including fake IT workers likely linked to North Korea and China, are abusing ChatGPT for nefarious purposes. The report highlights ten banned operations where the chatbot was used for social engineering, cyber snooping, and spam content generation. Four of these operations originated in China, frequently generating social media posts promoting pro-Communist narratives. Notably, some threats involved fake job applications and the creation of phishing malware, such as ScopeCreep, which targeted unsuspecting gamers. Furthermore, groups from Russia utilized the AI to produce disinformation related to the German elections. OpenAI has restricted all accounts associated with these activities, underscoring a growing concern over the misuse of AI technologies in organized cybercrime and state-sponsored hacking. The report illustrates a concerning trend of AI’s adaptation for malicious purposes, with various geographic actors leveraging its capabilities to enhance their operations.
