Detection Firm Reveals 82% of Herbal Remedy Books on Amazon May Be AI-Generated

A recent study by Originality.ai revealed a concerning trend in herbal remedies on Amazon, with 82% of titles likely generated by AI. This “AI slop” includes products like ginkgo “memory-boost tinctures” and fennel “tummy-soothing syrups,” raising alarm among experts. Medical herbalist Sue Sprung noted the prevalence of misleading AI-generated content, which risks leading readers astray from genuine herbal research. One AI-authored bestseller, the Natural Healing Handbook, claims to be a source of self-help, but its authorship and credibility are questionable, lacking any substantial online presence. Additionally, the research flagged stereotypical names and emojis often associated with AI content, while many books referenced controversial figures promoting unverified cures. Dan Conway, CEO of the Publishers Association, called for Amazon to label AI-generated content to combat this trend. Amazon stated it actively monitors compliance with its content guidelines to address potential violations.
