DevSummit Boston: Essential Insights for Delivering AI Products that Deliver Real Value

Share

At the InfoQ Dev Summit in Boston, Phil Calçado, CEO of Outropy, shared insights for software leaders on developing and scaling generative AI products. Drawing from three years of experience and a wealth of knowledge in software architecture, he highlighted the disparities between the rich automation tools available for engineers and the lack of resources for managers. Calçado recounted a failed product attempt, attributing its shortcomings to users’ tendencies to reverse-engineer rather than leverage it for productivity. He outlined three prevalent mindsets in AI development: focusing on current model releases without addressing limitations, lengthy projects yielding slight accuracy improvements, and a software-engineering approach that prioritizes rapid iterations on pluggable components. He introduced fundamental abstractions like workflows and agents, emphasizing the importance of decoupling components through semantic event buses. He advocated for adapting existing software principles to accommodate AI’s unique challenges, suggesting durable-workflow frameworks for managing stateful processes effectively.
