On Monday, former OpenAI researcher Andrej Karpathy clarified the differences between various ChatGPT models on X (formerly Twitter). He addressed user confusion regarding model versions such as GPT-4o, GPT-4, and “o3.” Karpathy emphasized that “o3” is superior for complex tasks, stating that those using ChatGPT professionally should prioritize this model. He described GPT-4o as suitable for day-to-day tasks and noted that “o4,” currently available in a limited form, is not as effective as “o3.” His recommendations include using GPT-4o for simple questions (40% of use), “o3” for complex queries (40%), GPT-4.1 for casual coding (10%), and the “Deep Research” toggle (10%) for in-depth inquiries. Karpathy also mentioned using other AI models for different tasks. His insights come as OpenAI projects significant revenue growth, expecting over $12 billion by 2025.
