Disney Alleges Google is Leveraging AI for Widespread Copyright Infringement

Disney has officially accused Google of “massive scale” copyright infringement concerning its characters and works through AI technology. In a cease-and-desist letter dated Wednesday, Disney’s attorneys demanded that Google halt the unauthorized use of its copyrighted content, which they claim is exploited via Google’s generative AI models. Disney alleges that Google copies and redistributes significant portions of its properties, including well-known franchises like “Star Wars,” “Frozen,” and Marvel characters, without permission. The letter describes Google’s AI systems as a “virtual vending machine” capable of mass-reproducing Disney’s intellectual property, misleadingly branded with Google’s Gemini logo. Despite ongoing discussions, Disney asserts that Google has failed to address these concerns, prompting the legal action. Disney’s CEO Bob Iger emphasized the company’s commitment to protecting its IP and insists on the implementation of measures to prevent future infringements. This accusation follows similar actions Disney has taken against other AI companies for copyright violations.
